Basics of NVH Analysis

Young man in front of a whiteboard

Duration

Half-day course
9:00 AM to 12:00 PM

Price
$250

Target group:

This seminar is aimed at newcomers who want to understand the capabilities and uses – the “whys” -- of working with sound, vibration, perception, and potentially with ArtemiS SUITE. We recommend following this course with the 1-day course Introduction to ArtemiS SUITE – Basic Use, which builds on this foundation with information about the “hows” – the depth and control of the software.

Prerequisite:

Basic knowledge about data acquisition is an advantage. The half-day training course Introduction to ArtemiS SUITE Recorder is available on this topic.

Seminar Objectives:

This course will go over basic noise and vibration analysis concepts that are used regularly by test and development engineers. With the assumption that valid data has already been collected, the first-level sound and vibration analysis terms and some properties will be reviewed. The differences between some settings, and the limitations of the analyses, will also be shown.

Deliverables:

  • Introduction to digital signal processing:
    • Level analysis
    • Signal Processing for audio data
    • The Fourier block: time-frequency transformation
    • Fast Fourier Transformation (FFT)
    • Time and frequency resolutions of the FFT: what; why, and how to select
    • Windowing, overlap
    • Multidimensional data analysis, analysis of frequency, time and level in one diagram (FFT vs. Time)
    • Consideration of the RPM-speed information (FFT vs. RPM)
  • Meaning of single values
    • Level – SPL, overall, dB(A), etc.
    • Loudness – N5, N10, etc.
    • Root Sum Square (RSS), or Quadratic Sum

Remarks:

Training material is provided in print and as pdf on a USB stick. Notebooks and front ends are available for all participants.
