PreSense – Interactive NVH simulator for virtual engineering & prototyping

Save expensive prototypes by virtual test drives: With PreSense, our NVH simulator, users experience vehicle acoustics before it is even possible to combine all the individual components and assemblies physically. PreSense uses simulation data (CAE), measurement data and results from binaural transfer path analyses to create an interactive acoustic vehicle simulation.

Furthermore, PreSense can also be used as an interactive sound design studio for ASD.

The driver acts and behaves like driving a real vehicle while a driving model calculates vehicle speed, engine speed(s) and load(s). The NVH simulator auralizes the corresponding sounds, e.g. from powertrain, tire/road and wind in real time.

Users are able to replace, add or modify powertrains, components and other sound sources virtually during the simulation. Changes are immediately audible and enables the driver of the virtual vehicle to undertake a valid acoustic assessment without in-depth specialist knowledge. The possibility to experience sound and vibrations supports quick and safeguarded decisions.

Highlights

  • Time saving: Accelerated development process by acoustic assessments in early development stages
  • Cost savings: Virtual test drives for assessing NVH performance before components and assemblies are physically present or combinable
  • Data preparation: Use simulated data (CAE) and measured data & results from binaural transfer path analyses
  • High-end & true-to-life: Combination of binaural technologies, calibrated multi-modal playback, advanced auralization algorithms and interactive sound design tools makes PreSense a powerful tool

Applications

  • Virtual prototyping & engineering
    • Make simulation variants (virtual prototypes) audible
    • Experience and evaluate sound and vibration comfort as early as possible in the development process (e.g. estimation of NVH performance of a first powertrain prototype in various vehicles)
    • Interactive experience of TPA results
  • Decision-making in the development process
    • Make what-if analyses audible
    • Perceive the effects of different measures without (needing) an additional prototype
    • Assess countermeasures without prior NVH knowledge
    • Decision-making process: hear differences, convince colleagues and decision makers
  • Acoustic assessment of control strategies for hybrid vehicles
    • Evaluate energy management and corresponding control strategies at an early development stage
    • Find the best compromise concerning energy consumption, drivability and acoustic performance through an interdisciplinary approach.
  • Active Sound Design & Engine Sound Enhancement
    • Experience engine sound enhancement (ESE), futuristic sounds for electric vehicles and the impact of AVAS on interior noise
    • Speed up the development process: Use the simulator to advance tuning and validation of ASD (Active Sound Design)
    • Consider vehicle performance and masking noise from wind, tire/road and powertrain without requiring a real vehicle or test track
    • Revolutionize your workflow: create sounds with the integrated BlackBerry QNX ASD software
    • Integrate third-party sound synthesizers using interfaces for software/hardware in the loop
  • Making TPA results perceptible
    • Listen to sound shares individually and find the root cause of noise complaints
    • Determine responsible transfer paths for an unwanted sound phenomena
    • Derive countermeasures and optimization potential
    • Simplified in-situ assessment by decision makers
  • Troubleshooting and target sound setting
    • Assess various measures or sound manipulations by means of jury testing involving customers, colleagues or decision makers
  • Benchmarking: Comparing vehicles, engines and development stages in virtual test drives
    • Weather-independent testing, requiring neither a real test track nor physical test vehicles
    • Testers are able to interactively control, evaluate and virtually modify sounds.
    • Even minor changes to vehicle sound are instantly perceivable

Variants

The NVH simulator is available as a scalable solution in different configurations and configuration levels. Interfaces, e.g. to third-party software solutions like IPG CarMaker®, significantly extend its capabilities.

Desktop Simulator with pedals, stiring wheel and a monitor.

Desktop simulator

The desktop simulator offers calibrated and aurally accurate sound reproduction via a binaural headset. Pedals, steering wheel and a monitor simulate the driving situation.

SoundSeat

Combined with the Sound Seat, the NVH simulator can be operated like a real vehicle. The user accelerates, brakes and changes gear while the system adapts sounds and vibrations in real time to the respective driving situation. Shakers provide realistic steering wheel and seat vibrations while a large screen offers an overall visual impression of the driving situation.

SoundCar

Integrated into an adapted real vehicle, the NVH simulator facilitates playback in a real vehicle environment. Both the acoustic and technical vibration-specific aspects of sound perception are considered. The system reproduces sound scenarios recorded in the vehicle by simultaneous generation of airborne sound and vibration stimulus, e.g. from steering column and driver’s seat.

Complete vehicle simulator

PreSense can be integrated as a subsystem in a full-fledged vehicle simulator with movable platform. To correspondingly adapt sounds in the NVH simulation software, the vehicle software transmits operating state variables such as engine speed, vehicle speed and load via a software interface.

Mobile NVH simulator

As a mobile version with ANC headphones, the NVH simulator can be used in a real vehicle without costly conversion measures. Virtual vehicle sounds are played back in a real driving situation, and the operating state variables are transmitted via CAN bus. For better comparability, the test vehicle should be in the same vehicle class as the simulation, as vibrations cannot be artificially modified.
