The analog HSU (HEAD Shoulder Unit) artificial head microphone series is the perfect solution for creating reproducible, binaural recordings. These recordings and their aurally accurate playback provide the ideal basis for assessing the quality of product noise.
The artificial heads in the HSU series faithfully reproduce all acoustically relevant parts of the human ear, head and shoulders, which means that an HSU artificial head microphone has the same influence on the sound field as a human body would. As a result, HSU artificial head microphones record sounds such that the listener hears them as if they themselves were in the original sound field. To play back the recordings so that they are aurally accurate, they have to be equalized separately.

Binaural recordings for multi-channel applications
Binaural recordings for multi-channel applications
To perform binaural recordings together with multi-channel recordings, the analog artificial head is connected to the multi-channel front end HEADlab, which, in turn, is connected to a host computer. The ArtemiS SUITE recorder software equalizes the recordings separately. Especially accurate results with extremely high-quality technical data (e.g. for low-noise applications) are possible when using the HEADlab module labHSU, which equalizes the recordings separately. labHSU also allows the binaural sound recordings to be played back with equalization.
Binaural recordings on the go
The HSU artificial head can be combined with a hand-held mobile recording and playback system for binaural recordings on the go. The handily sized systems SQuadriga III and SQobold enable recording and playback with equalization and without the need for additional desktop applications. This is possible thanks to an integrated memory, a range of equalization profiles (ID, FF, DF, USER, LIN) and comprehensive analysis functions.
The combination of the HSU artificial head with the HEADlab module labHSU and the labPWR I.3 power box creates a high-end, mobile system for binaural recording and playback. Recordings can be started and stopped using a cellphone.
The HSU artificial head microphone is available in two variants:
- HSU III.2: Artificial head with ICP® microphones
- HSU III.3: Artificial head with condenser microphones to measure very low sound pressure levels
Applications
- Examining and optimizing of the sound quality of technical products: Vehicles and vehicle components, household appliances, office equipment and tools
- Binaural measurements during product development and quality control
- Sound design and product sound optimization
- Soundscape and environmental acoustics
Features
- ICP® or condenser microphones
- Low inherent noise of just 15.5 dB(A) (HSU III.2) or 6.5 dB(A) (HSU III.3)
- High dynamics of up to 129.5 dB(A)
- Equalization possible with labHSU or BEQ II.1
- Equalization options: ID, FF, DF, USER, LIN (no equalization)
- Maximum sound pressure level of up to 155 dB(A)
- Can be calibrated using a pistonphone
Variants
HSU III.2: Artificial head with ICP® microphones
HSU III.2 is the standard artificial head: The ICP® microphones can be used for combining binaural recording systems as you wish. The combination with the hand-held systems SQobold and SQuadriga III is especially compact and easy to use. With inherent noise of just 16 dB(A) and a high dynamic range of 119 dB(A), the HSU III.2 artificial head microphone covers the majority of applications.
HSU III.3: Low-noise artificial head
Special condenser microphones in the analog HSU III.3 artificial head enable the aurally accurate recording of extremely low sound pressures such as those occurring in IT. The low-noise artificial head boasts a dynamic range of 106.5 dB(A) with extremely low inherent noise of 6.5 dB(A).
